Puff Simulations

These animations were produced using Puff simulation data.
  • Volcanic eruption time series for North Pacific: 1975 - 2006
  • Augustine (4.3M .gif) Six separate events during Jan 13-14, 2006, demonstrating the multi-eruption tracking capability.
  • Bezymianny (1.6M .gif) eruption on August 6-7, 2001.
  • Cleveland
  • Etna (596k .gif) eruption on July 22, 2001 using 72 hours of AVN model reanalysis data. Read an excerpt describing Etna's effect on the city of Catania and its airport.
  • Hekla (4.2M .gif) eruption on February 26, 2000, including the flight path of a research aircraft.
  • Katmai (hypothetical) (53M mpg) A hypothetical catastrophic eruption of Novarupta vent on Jan 1, 2002. Windfields are AVN for low evevation and UK Met Office's stratospheric winds for upper elevations (30-60 km).
  • Reventador (2.4M .gif) 24-hour 3D simulation of the October 31, 2002 eruption using NCEP reanalysis data. Shear occurs at approximately 15 km.
  • Spurr (4.1M .gif) The Sept. 17, 1992 eruption of Mt. Spurr, Alaska using NCEP reanalysis data. Individual frames are also available
  • NOPAC composite (11M mpg) A composite of several NOPAC eruptions over the past 15 years.
